The Process Description:
Your portrait may be done in charcoal, pastels or oil. Fees will vary according to the medium, the scope ( head, three
quarter view, or full figure) and the degree of complexity. Travel, framing and shipping are additional and not included in
the fee.
It is important for me as an artist to meet my subject in person. While I perfer to work from life I recognize that photographs
are a necessary element in our high speed world. I take my own picture references whenever possible. Photo sittings usually
take 1-2 hours on average. If a subject is unable to sit, then I require as many photos be provided as possible.
It takes 2 to 12 months to complete a portrait depending on my schedule and the complexity of the painting. Reservations may
be booked between January -September 1
Your commissioned portrait is a collaboration. The likeness I render is an interpretation by an artistŐs hand and not a painted
photograph. Understanding this is essential to a satisfying and rewarding experience.
We decide on the scope of the portrait: whether it will be head and shoulders vignette, three-quarter view (usually with hands)
or a full figure view; if there are to be additional figures, plain or detailed background, simple or elaborate elements.
There are three essential choices to make your portrait a satisfying experience and worthwhile heirloom.
The garment worn by the sitter should be simple, interesting and becoming.
The pose should be suitable, comfortable and characturistic of the sitter.
The lighting needs to adequately define the features and emphasise the best qualities
of the sitter.
I prefer to work from life. On average, I require 3-4, 3-hour sittings to complete a full color portrait.
For those who are unable to sit for a life portrait, I use a digital camera to shoot my own photo references. The photoshoot
usually takes 1-2 hours and can be done here in the gallery or, for an additional fee, I can travel to your home or business.
